SMOOTH RIDE — William Hite checks out the new Hummer EV at the Electrification 2022 International Conference and Exposition on June 28-30, Charlotte Convention Center.

“Electric Transportation: EVs and Beyond” is the third and last in the series “Your Home & Business Toolkit: A Pathway to Energy Efficiency and Cost Reduction” created and presented by William M. Hite, R.N., of Waynesville.

It is offered free as a public service by the Creation Care Ministry of FUMC, Waynesville; and the WNC Climate Action Coalition.

The audience will leave with an understanding of such basics as types of EVs ̶ hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), pros and cons of each, options for charging vehicles, tax credits, common EV misconceptions, and a look at our electrified present and future.

At an informal show following Hite’s presentation, local and regional EV owners from the Blue Ridge EV Club will show their vehicles and answer attendees’ questions.

Attendees can get a close look at six Teslas, two Mach E Mustangs, two Kia Niro EVs, a Chevy Bolt, a Chevy Spark, two RAV4 Primes, a Volvo XC40 Recharge, and a BMW i3.

Electric vehicles are a triple-win-plus-bonus for everyone:

1) EV owners enjoy astonishingly quiet rides and save owners hundreds of dollars annually — no fuel to buy, fewer parts to repair, less maintenance.

2) Save money on federal taxes: The Inflation Reduction Act passed Sunday, Aug. 7 renews the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit for all makes of new EVs bought between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2032.

3) EVs are good for everybody’s health: EVs reduce the amount of carcinogenic, heart-disease-causing emissions we breathe.

Bonus: Reduced emissions will help mitigate future extreme weather. Atmospheric emissions from gas-powered vehicles are major causes of the climate emergency.
